The study subjects were randomly chosen from among 6 million cell phone users.

In a report by the New York Times, the researchers from Northeastern University in Boston obtained their data from an unnamed European cell phone service provider.

The study lasted for 6 months and targeted the cell phone user's locations whenever they made or received a call or text message. The result of the study concluded that humans are a basically boring bunch and we rarely travel more than a 20-mile radius from our home base.

The larger goal of the study was to eventually create a computer model through further studies for understanding emergency response, urban planning and the spread of disease.

What do you think? Was it necessary? Was it ethical?

Source : http://www.landlinemag.com/todays_news/Daily/2008/Jun08/060208/060608-07.htm

iPhone Goes Solar

I've off getting an iPhone and now with the new patent that Apple has filed, I may have to change my mind. I was told the iPhone lost charge quickly and well, what good is that?

The new patent will create a solar powered iPhone and that's a very good thing on many levels. It means you can go out where electricity is limited and still be connected just by laying your iPhone in the sun.

The design won't make the iPhone any larger either. Other companies have attempted to create solar powered cell phones and MP3 players, however by the time the necessary solar panel is added to the gadet, there isn't much room to call the item portable any longer.

Apple is putting the solar panel UNDER the touch screen in a thin layer so it will not require any change in the iPhones current sleek design.

Yeah, I may have to get one now....

Google's gPhone Looks Set to Launch

In today's Wall Street Journal, Google is revving up to start a series of announcements about their gGphone. Google's own mobile phone software which would come bundled with Google's own custom gadgets : maps, search, YouTube, messaging and all received on your mobile phone.

The current buzz on the street is that this will be free to consumers and supported by ads. It's also rumored to run over several different cell phone models. Are the big boys shaking in their mobile phone cases yet? It's also proposed that third-party developers could create applications to run on the gPhone system.
Other buzz about the gPhone includes that it would have very few restrictions placed on it by carriers and would support GPS tracking, Wi-Fi, high-speed 3G cellular networking as well as still and video camera depending on the hardware. According to sources, Google may be ready to name T-Mobile as the carrier in the U.S. due to its being one of the most consumer-friendly carriers in the country.
Stay tuned - more info on this launch as it becomes available!

Get Paid to Hear an Ad on Your Cell Phone?

Advertisers are going to be clamoring for your cell phone in the near future. It's a no brainer that there are more cell phones and computers than televisions in the world, so why not run ads?

Right now a company called Pay Per Play is running advertisements in America for giants such as HBO, Harley Davidson and Taco Bell. These companies are reducing their mainstream network advertising costs and going to the Internet as a means of advertising their wares. And so far, it's working.

Now from the Internet to your cell phone. In India there is an advertising program called HapAd that is being tested and if it is successful, you can bet it will going gangbusters in America. There is already minor advertising on some United States cell phones while you're connecting to certain value added services but with HapAd, the cell phone user chooses that they want to hear an advertisement and they actually make money for doing so.

In simple terms, at the time of making a call, the subscriber can decide to hear the 20 second advertisement before the call is connected and this will be a subscription based service. There are also several options to subscribers - the type of advertisements they wish to hear, the duration for which they would want to hear it and also the option to skip an advertisement.

Each cell phone carrier can decide how they want to reward their subscribers. With either more airtime or discount on the cell phone bill or just a check for cash back.

The advertisement revenue is to be shared by three parties - Airvoice for the software and for procuring the advertisements, telephone companies for providing their network and the phone subscriber who decides to hear.

India is a massive market to test-drive this program in, in 2007 the industry estimates pegged the total value (of the mobile advertising market) at 250 million (rupies) and growing at a staggering 250%. Airvoice currently has no direct comparison as it offers advertisements in voice and its technology model is completely different, making it appealing to subscribers and clients.

With a mobile subscriber base of 250 million and targeted to grow to 650 million in four years' time, the cell phone is going to become a big advertisement tool.

Watch and see, it will be here in America before you know it!

Dual Sim Mobile Phones

How many of you are excited about the potential uses of a dual sim mobile phone?

What is the biggest advantage of a dual sim phone in your opinion?

For me the biggest advantage is being able to have more than one mobile phone number. Please someone help me understand! A device that does not have a search feature for emails or contacts? How is it possible that someone could build a mini computer like this and forget search functionality. Or simply deliver a product to the public without it having search functionality? Is it possible that they just forgot and it was a huge mistake?

Did they spend too much time designing the cool box and that sleek bag your iPhone gets handed to you in while waiting in line for the coolest gadget to ever be built..? Where the test subjects with a contact list in the thousands? Where were they ? Did they not ever need to search for a contact based on the content in the notes section of a contact? Did they not need to search through email for a keyword because they could not remember who sent the email regarding the house for sale on main street?

DAMN!!! MAN... I feel like someone.. No NO NO! not one but several people should lose their job over this mistake? I don't think its heavy enough for a class action law suit, but damn man... How do you forget this feature in something that is a computer? How? It's like DeWalt forgetting that people need cordless drills that are durable? Or that it need to have the ability to hold a charge for several hours in order for a construction crew to get their job done?

I just don't understand... Did they not have a focus group? Did they pass one out to 5 people and each of those people just tested the device with 5 email message and 5 contacts?

This has nothing to do with Mobileringtones of course, but who cares about ringtones when your expensive mini computer slash telephone doesn't do what you need it to do... I love apple computers and love what they have done in terms of providing a stable environment... But DAMN iPhone crew... Your team really blew it..... Blew it big time...

And why hasn't the software updates given us search capability? At least give us some answers? Some kind of explanation? You at least owe us that...!!!

Cellphone Accessories - What's On Your Cellphone?

I guarantee even the cellular phone ring tone and wallpaper creators never realized how popular these add-ons would be; they are so easy to download, it is not surprising some people have hundreds on their phone. Although giving your phone that individual touch is something anyone can do, it is primarily aimed at the younger market place. Because of the entertaining effect of ring tones and cellular phone wallpapers, computer experts and cell phone manufacturers are quick to design software and gadgets that provide easy installation.

To help feed this popularity of swapping information, the ring tone converter was created and has become very popular. These are useful devices that also help with downloading the sound files from special web sites.

There is no need to worry about different models and manufacturers because cellular phone ring tone converters are generally cross compatible. The chances are if you haven't changed your phone in the last few years then this facility will not be available but it may have its own version installed directly. Newer ring tone converters no longer require cables or even infrared connections to transfer these files.

Of course, serious addicts like to create their own using built in composers. Of course once you have your own ring tone, it is a simple matter to edit and change it at any time. For those of you that now want their own cellular phone ring tone composer do not worry because many of the converters have this function built in as part of the package.

The craze is so big now that not only have a huge number of web sites set themselves up purely to deal with this but many now have weekly and monthly update plans available to subscribers. There is a variety of ways these sites can update your phone and they no longer require your phone to be connected to a computer.

The choice is yours, because you can create your own sounds, collect them from others or download them from the internet. All you have to do is check that your phone can use the software supplied and after that whether, it won't matter if it's a new cellular phone ring tone or wallpaper, you probably won't come have any problems.

Should Teenagers Have Cell Phones?

Although many schools ban them, a frequent debate among parents is "Should teenagers have their own cell phones?" and if so, the debate continues to "What age is best?"

No one knows your teen better than you do. Children mature at different rates and the 13-year old in one home may be ready to handle the responsibility of owning a cell phone while the 16-year old in the next house is nowhere near ready. The first thing you need to do is make the judgment call on whether or not your teen is ready.

Next, what will the phone be used for? Talking with friends, text messaging, instant messaging or (d) all of the above. If you add your teen to your own cell phone plan, make sure you read the fine print and find out if there is a limit to data (ie: text messages, instant messages and downloads) or you could get a very shocking cell phone bill the following month.

One solution many parents use is to get their child a "Pay as you Go" type of cell phone plan and then let the child earn their cell phone minutes through chores and other activities such as mowing the lawn, getting straight A's, babysitting, and more. The phones available on the pay as you go plans generally are bare bones and many don't have cameras, instant messaging capabilities or other "extras". You can usually get around that by purchasing an unlocked cell phone and switching the SIM card (little card inside the cell phone usually under the battery) with a better quality phone and using all the features on the pay as you go account.

If your child is showing a level of responsibility that shows he or she is ready to keep up with a cell phone and use it responsibly, give your child a chance to show you how mature they are and let them have a cell phone of their own.

Your Cell Phone, Your Best Fashion Accessory

Since the very first moment that you purchased a cell phone, have you noticed that it has been quickly becoming your most cherished accessory? Many people have even gotten rid of their landline phones due to lack of use so they could just use their cell phones as their primary form of communication. Because of this, they end up putting many different bells and whistles, otherwise known as extra features, on their cell phone in order to customize it the way that they want it.

There are just so many different ways that you can customize your cell phone in order to make it one of the most important accessories that you own. When you enjoy using your cell phone, the chances are that you are going to be purchasing mobile ring tones, specialized ring tones and even mp3s that you can listen to on your cell phone as well. Depending on the phone that you have, you may even be able to play games, connect with others by sending videos and even searching throughout various spots on the internet.

Customizing your cell phone as your favorite accessory has gone well beyond simply purchasing a new case or even adding gems to it to make it stand out. With a great amount of features, your cell phone can actually become your lifeline, making it one of the best accessories that you could ever own. Ease of use, great features and a quick way to connect, the cell phone is a great asset for anyone today.

When One Cell Phone Charger Is Never Enough

Having a cell phone is always handy. You want to make sure that you have your cell phone on you so you can make calls whenever necessary. Of course, in order to get the most out of your cell phone experience, you need to make sure that you have the ability to charge it whenever possible. After all, your cell phone will only be useful to you if it is always charged and ready to go.

As a general accessory across the board, cell phones will come with a wall adapter that you can use to charge your phone from home or from any available outlet during your travels. Usually, this single charger will be the only one that many people will need, unless you are a person who is always out and about on the road in your vehicle. This is where a car charger for your phone always comes in very handy.

It is safe to say that many people have two cell phone chargers in their possession at any given time. This will include both a wall adapter as well as a charger version for your car. However, if you have a family where you own more than one vehicle, it may also be in your best interest to have more than one car charger as well so you can always ensure a way to charge your phone whenever you are out and about.

There are plenty different kinds of chargers available for your phone today. As a matter of fact, some people have even been using, portable battery packs to quickly charge or even solar chargers to power their cell phone using the help of the sun's rays.

Steering Clear Of Cell Phone Scams

Because your wireless phone is one of the best ways to make your life easier, the last thing that you will want to think about is getting scammed whenever you are looking to purchase a brand new one. Basically, in order to stay ahead of the game and to keep yourself clear of the threat of any sort of cell phone scams, the best thing that you can do is arm yourself with the knowledge of how some of these scams work.

When you are looking for features to add to your cell phone, you may want to be leery of any ads that will offer free music downloads or even free ring tones. While some of them may be free initially, you could end up getting dragged into a variety of charges on your phone over time. Additionally, some cell phone users have even noticed a number of incoming calls to their phone that produced high connection fees.

Many of the headaches of cell phone scams can be avoided by simply using your cell phone provider for any of your extras. Whenever it comes to downloads, added features and programs, using your cell phone provider will help to ensure that you are not placing anything harmful on your phone. Just as you may notice spam messages that can come into your email, you can also get the same junk filtering into your cell phone through text messages. All of these things can be avoided by simply paying attention to where you are giving out your number as well as where you choose to get any of your features to add to your cell phone.

Have A Cell Phone? Be Safe While Driving!

Of course, one of the best advantages of having a cell phone is that you have a quick and easy way to get a call to someone in the case of an emergency. Cell phones are great to have around whenever you need to communicate with friends, relatives, authorities and more. However, what happens when your cell phone ends up being the cause of an accident or some other incident?

Keeping yourself out of trouble with your cell phone is easy! Be smart and use your cell phone wisely. If you feel as though you need to use your cell phone while you are driving, then it may be a great idea to get yourself a hands free setup. This way, you can drive without having to worry about an accident from not having both hands on the wheel. As a matter of fact, in some states, there are actually guidelines and state laws in place to help ensure that people are not using cell phones while driving without the help of hands free devices.

In order to check and see if your state has any specific laws on driving and using your cell phone, you can simply call your local Division of Motor Vehicles or even your local police department. All in all, being smart while you are driving and using your cell phone should help to keep you and all of the other people on the road safe and free of accidents.

The Case of the Mosquito Ringtone

Having noticed previously that the search term "mosquito ringtone" was bringing people to the site, I decided to investigate exactly how a mosquito ringtone worked, or rather *if* it worked at all.

I started searching for a number of sites and finally found one that had samples of various ringtones. You can put a mosquito ringtone on any cell phone, locked or unlocked. The ringtones were split up supposedly as to what someone 14-20 could hear, someone 21-29 could hear and so on. I called my 14-year old daughter in the room and started playing them.

At we could both hear the ones that were in the 14-39 year range. Then when we got into the supposed range that people 40 and over can't hear, it got interesting. I heard a faint "click" and nothing more. My daughter however heard an annoying high pitched sound (hence the mosquito). Suddenly I felt like she had the acute hearing of a dog and my own ability to hear was seriously diminished.

We decided we needed a qualifier. I called up my daughter's best friend and asked if her mom was busy, they both came over and we repeated the test. Again we all heard the 14-29 range. At 30 and over, the other mom and I were cut out of hearing the ring tones after that but both girls described them as high pitched and annoying.

So there you have it, mosquito ringtones are actually the real deal but for how long? Guess I'll stick to Modern Age by the Strokes as my ringtone, at least I can hear it!

Has a Cell Phone Killer Been Used on You?

So, there you were on the bus, in your favorite restaurant or just outside on the sidewalk and you got a call and it's a call you've been waiting on with news you've been waiting on and then ...nothing. You tried to call the person back to let them know the call dropped and you couldn't get a signal.
After five minutes or so you were able to get a signal and the minute you started talking, your call dropped again. A couple of minutes later your phone rings and in the middle of the ringtone - it dies again.

You curse sun spots, your cell phone carrier and even your phone - it may not have been any of those things. It may have been a someone using a personal cell phone blocker. For under $50, people can purchase a device that effectively kills all cell phone reception in a 2-to-40 foot area. The devices themselves are roughly the size of cell phones, usually black and have three rubber capped antennae on the top about one to two inches in length. They can be hidden easily in a pocket and don't have to be removed from clothing to work. Someone would just need to reach into their pocket, push the button and all cell phone signals will be halted.

These devices are illegal in many countries, but that doesn't stop them from being sold online and shipped. Customs can't catch everything so some people are getting them and using them. It's currently a problem in Europe with only a limited number of incidents in the United States.

However next time you're trying to talk to someone and you keep getting dropped, look around to see if anyone is looking at you and smirking, it may just be someone with a cell phone killer.

One of a Kind Romantic Gift

Want to give the one you adore a really fun and unusual holiday gift? It all starts with upgrading their phone.

Plan a fun night for the two of you after the festivities are over and put together a bag to be opened when the two of you can be alone after the party guests have gone home.

First of all, get a better phone for your gift recipient. They may like a flip phone or a slide model, with or without a camera, it doesn't matter you can find a phone with all the bells and whistles and if you want to get a really good deal, forgo the high prices of your wireless carrier and go for an unlocked phone.

An unlocked phone is just a cell phone that will work on any network. It's just a matter of inserting the SIM card from the current phone into the new phone and it will work beautifully. Then make it a little more special and download a special ringtone. It could be the song that was playing when you first met, the song that you consider to be "your song" as a couple or just a current fave that you both have. From the most obscure to the most popular songs, you can find it as a ring tone and load it onto the phone before you give it.

Include a couple of scented candles and maybe a little cell phone bling for a fun touch. A cell phone charm or cover will make a great accessory. For added smiles, as you hand the bag to your love, slyly dial the number on the phone you're giving them so the song you're set up will play.

After the craziness of the holidays winds down, give the one you love a gift they will appreciate and use all throughout the year and when you give it to them, make the occasion as special as they are.

Battling With Your Teen Over Text Messaging?

Over the past 2 years, many a parent has gotten an eye-opening cell phone bill due to their teen's text messaging.

When you were a teen, you probably spent endless hours chatting on the phone. Times have changed and text messaging is the way most teens spend their time communicating and that's where the surprises can happen. If you went for a low monthly cost cell phone plan in the beginning, you may have neglected to look at the pricing for text messaging. When an overzealous teen has been texting non-stop for one billing cycle and then you see the results, it can be shocking. Some parents have reported bills in the hundreds of dollars range.

There are a good number of cell phone plans that will allow for unlimited text messaging or text messaging for free with anyone else on the carrier's network. It's a good idea to search around for a cell phone plan that will allow for the maximum number of text messages along with being a good monthly deal for your bank account.

Another option some parents opt for is to get a "Pay as You Go" type of account with the cheapest cell phone possible and then upgrade to an unlocked cell phone with a better keypad for text messaging. The parents either let the teens earn their cell phone time through chores done and good grades or older teens can work a part time job and learn a fast lesson in both budgeting and responsibility when they are paying for their own text messaging time.

You don't have to be at war with your teen over text messaging, there are some easy solutions - just choose the option that will save you the most money in the long run.

Hot Holiday Gift - An Unlocked Cell Phone!

Want to get someone a great gift this holiday season and you want it to be something they will both appreciate and use? Make it an unlocked cell phone!

You've probably seen the term "unlocked phone" around and most unlocked phones are a really good deal. You've probably seen the Subscriber Identification Module or SIM card in your phone at one time or another and a locked phone will only recognize that SIM card from a specific carrier. The "lock" is what keeps the phone only communicating to one specific carrier for which the SIM card was made. The beauty of an unlocked phone is that it will recognize any SIM card from any carrier. This means if you want to get someone a really terrific cell phone and upgrade from what they currently have - it can allow someone to have a much better cell phone with that heft "direct from the carrier" price tag. The major brands are all available including Motorola unlocked phones, LG, Samsung, Nokia and more.

If you decide to get someone an unlocked cell phone as a holiday gift, along with their new cell phone, get them some mobile ring tone credits and maybe a little cell phone "bling" to let them add accessories to their cell phones like charms or unique cell phone covers. Another great gift you can toss in their stocking is a gift certificate for a few mobile ring tones.

An unlocked cell phone can make a great gift for that hard to buy for person on your holiday list this gift-giving season.

Mosquito Ringtone

Have you heard of this mosquito ringtone? If you are my age, you apparently cannot hear it..... LOL. I am not quite sure if this data is legitimate or if it is a very entertaining story that has managed to grow some legs and get pushed across the internet like a friendly virus. Based on search results it looks like this ringtone is getting some 70,000 searches a month. That is quite a bit of energy for something that I cannot hear... I thought that dogs were the only household creatures that could hear high pitched frequencies, ie the dog whistle. Now we have the youth equivalent of the dog whistle imbedded in the mobile phone !! How exciting is this....

I think that parents should use this exact frequency to their advantage. For example we could use the Mosquito ringtone to wake our children up early to do their chores. How great would that be? We could sleep in late and have them up by 6 am mowing the lawn or shoveling the driveway. Or to start studying for the last algebra test they failed last week. Maybe we could use on a larger scale to let them know it is time to come home. Imagine that.. We could get the local police and fire departments involved to play this annoying mosquito ringtone to interrupt their late night parties or romantic moments that should not be happening while parents are out of town...!

Regardless, if this urban tale is valid or not, it makes for some entertaining ideas. I hope you enjoyed this informative story about the mosquito ringtone. I just noticed this while searching for popular ringtones. Once I gather more information, I will keep you posted via the mobileringtones.com blog.

Adios...
